Dying for Capitalism: How Big Money Fuels the Threat of Extinction

It’s no secret that we live in a time of multiple bone-chilling crises. We face credible threats to human existence itself. Nuclear war and militarism; climate catastrophe on our doorstep; surging and waning Pandemics — all taking place in the context of deep polarization and tribal populism. This program will not only explore the interlocking nature of these threats and how they feed upon each other. It will show that they have a common root in our system of corporate capitalism. What are the implications for humanity as a whole?

It’s no secret that we live in a time of multiple, interlocking crises. Moodliar and Derber show that war, climate catastrophe, pandemics as well as deep polarization and tribal populism all have a common root in our system of corporate capitalism. Drawing from their upcoming book, they argue that these existential threats should not immobilize us: indeed they provide the moral and strategic imperative than can rally existing social change efforts into a vibrant anti-extinction movement. Using examples from past and contemporary movements, they find hope for social change in these dire times.

Charles Derber, Professor of Sociology at Boston College, is the author of twenty-five books, including The Wilding of America, The. Pursuit of Attention, Sociopathic Society, Corporation Nation, People Before Profit, and Welcome to the Revolution – translated into 12 languages. He is a public sociologist and life-long activist, who writes about structural and cultural analyses of capitalism and social movements seeking transformational systemic change.

Suren Moodliar helped found encuentro5, a movement-building center in Boston.
